River Rocks Tour - Geology Walk With Ingrid Birker

August 20, 2025, 6:30 PM | Departure from 289 Beach Road, Metis Beach

Join us for a special guided beach walk along the shoreline with science communicator and geologist Ingrid Birker. Starting from the beach behind 289 Beach Road, this 90-minute tour will explore the stunning diversity of metamorphic and layered sedimentary rock formations visible when this coastline is at low tide.  We will walk on ancient layers of steeply inclined (and gorgeous) red mudslate interbedded with grey siltstone and feldspar sandstone. These rocks formed about 500 million years ago when they sedimented as sea floor layers long before fish or even dinosaurs existed. And we will continue to find out how this deep time geological story was broken up a few times by tectonic movement and cycles of erosion, including glaciation and uplift about 10,000 years ago, which left behind mega-boulders and offshore rock exposures like Bull, cow and calf rock. Join us to discover how this river truly rocks!
